Drivers' Champion
Jack Brabham→Constructors' Champion
Cooper-Climax→Jack Brabham secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Cooper-Climax, in a season comprising nine races. Cooper-Climax also claimed the Constructors’ title. The 1959 Formula 1 season featured a competitive field, with six different race winners: Brabham, Tony Brooks, Stirling Moss, Rodger Ward, Jo Bonnier, and Bruce McLaren. Brabham and Brooks each achieved two victories, while Moss also won twice, including back-to-back wins in Portugal and Italy. Notably, Bruce McLaren won the United States Grand Prix from tenth on the grid.
The championship battle was closely contested throughout the year. Brabham led the standings from the opening round, but the points gap to his nearest rivals, Brooks and Moss, remained narrow. After round five, Brabham held a 13-point advantage over Brooks, but Brooks closed the gap to four points by the season’s end. Moss also remained in contention, finishing just 5.5 points behind Brabham. The title was undecided until the final race, reflecting a season-long three-way contest.
The season marked a significant period in F1 history, highlighting the growing competitiveness of rear-engined cars. Cooper-Climax’s success in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships underscored this technical shift. The campaign was also notable for its mechanical attrition, with engine, transmission, and gearbox failures accounting for a substantial number of retirements. The 1959 season stands out as a closely fought championship during a transformative era in Formula 1.
