1962 Season

Graham Hill secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for BRM, in a season that comprised nine races. BRM also captured the Constructors’ Championship, marking a significant achievement for the team. The season featured four different race winners: Graham Hill (4 wins), Jim Clark (3 wins), Bruce McLaren (1 win), and Dan Gurney (1 win). Notably, Hill won the Dutch, German, Italian, and South African Grands Prix, while Clark’s victories included the Belgian, British, and United States Grands Prix.

The title battle was closely contested, particularly between Hill and Clark. After five rounds, Hill led Clark by just one point (19 to 18). The competition intensified as Clark closed the gap with further wins, but Hill responded with consistent podiums and additional victories. By the final round, Hill had accumulated 42 points to Clark’s 30, establishing a clear margin and securing the championship.

The Constructors’ title also saw shifts in leadership. Lotus-Climax led after the British Grand Prix, but BRM regained and maintained the lead through the latter half of the season, finishing with 42 points to Lotus-Climax’s 36.

The 1962 season was characterized by mechanical attrition, with numerous retirements due to gearbox, engine, and suspension failures. The championship marked a turning point for BRM, as it was their first Constructors’ title. The season took place during the early 1.5-litre engine regulation era, with competitive balance among several teams and drivers, and no single team or driver dominating the entire year.
