Drivers' Champion
Alain Prost→Constructors' Champion
Williams→Alain Prost secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for McLaren, while Williams claimed the Constructors’ Championship in a season comprising 16 races. The campaign featured a closely contested title fight, with the championship outcome undecided until the final round. Prost finished the season with 72 points and four victories, narrowly ahead of Williams drivers Nigel Mansell (70 points, five wins) and Nelson Piquet (69 points, four wins).
The championship battle was dynamic, with multiple lead changes. Early in the season, Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet traded the top spot, but by midseason, Mansell emerged as a strong contender, leading after round 9 and maintaining his advantage through much of the latter half. Prost remained consistently competitive, accumulating 11 podiums—the most of any driver—and ultimately overtook both Williams drivers at the final race to clinch the title.
Williams dominated the Constructors’ standings, amassing 141 points and nine wins, significantly ahead of McLaren’s 96 points. The season saw five different race winners: Mansell, Piquet, Prost, Senna, and Gerhard Berger. Senna achieved eight pole positions, the highest for any driver that year.
Mechanical unreliability was notable, with high numbers of retirements due to engine and turbo failures, reflecting the turbocharged era’s technical challenges. The 1986 season is marked by its intense, multi-driver title contest and is recognized as one of the closest and most competitive in the turbo era of Formula 1.
