Drivers' Champion
Juan Fangio→Juan Fangio secured the drivers’ championship for Alfa Romeo in a season comprising eight races. The 1951 Formula One season featured a diverse set of winners, with six different drivers claiming victory, including Fangio, Nino Farina, Luigi Fagioli, José Froilán González, Alberto Ascari, and Lee Wallard. The season began with Fangio winning the Swiss Grand Prix from pole position. The Indianapolis 500, part of the World Championship but run to different regulations, was won by Lee Wallard driving for Kurtis Kraft.
The title fight was closely contested, with the points lead changing hands multiple times. After three rounds, Nino Farina led, but Fangio reclaimed the top spot after the French Grand Prix, which saw both Fangio and Fagioli share victory for Alfa Romeo. Ferrari emerged as a strong challenger mid-season, with González and Ascari winning the British and German Grands Prix, respectively. Ascari’s two victories brought him within striking distance of Fangio, and heading into the final round, Fangio led Ascari by just six points.
Fangio clinched the championship with a win at the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing the season with three victories and five podiums. Alfa Romeo was the most successful team, securing five wins, while Ferrari achieved three. The season was marked by high attrition, with engine failures being the most common cause of retirements. The 1951 season is notable for its competitive balance and the emergence of Ferrari as a consistent threat to Alfa Romeo during the early years of the Formula One World Championship.
