Drivers' Champion
Nelson Piquet→Constructors' Champion
Ferrari→Nelson Piquet secured the drivers’ championship, while Ferrari won the constructors’ title in a season spanning 15 races. The 1983 campaign was characterized by a close and competitive title battle, with the championship outcome decided at the final round.
Throughout the season, the lead in the drivers’ standings changed multiple times. Early on, Piquet, Alain Prost, and Patrick Tambay exchanged the top positions. Prost, driving for Renault, established a points advantage mid-season, reaching 51 points after round 11, compared to Piquet’s 37 and René Arnoux’s 34. However, Arnoux, driving for Ferrari, closed in during the latter stages, and Piquet mounted a late charge with victories at the Italian and European Grands Prix. Entering the final race, Prost led Piquet by just two points (57 to 55), with Arnoux still mathematically in contention. Piquet’s performance in the South African Grand Prix secured him the title by a narrow two-point margin over Prost (59 to 57).
The season featured eight different race winners, including John Watson’s notable victory from 22nd on the grid at the United States Grand Prix West. Mechanical reliability was a significant challenge, with engine failures accounting for the highest number of retirements.
Ferrari’s consistent points-scoring allowed them to claim the constructors’ championship, finishing ahead of Renault and Brabham. The 1983 season stands out in Formula 1 history as a closely fought contest during the turbocharged era, marked by shifting momentum and a dramatic conclusion.
