Drivers' Champion
Ayrton Senna→Constructors' Champion
McLaren→Ayrton Senna secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for McLaren, while McLaren also claimed the Constructors’ Championship in a season consisting of 16 races. Senna began the year with a commanding performance, winning the first four rounds and establishing a significant early lead in the standings. By round 4, he had accumulated 40 points and four wins, far ahead of his closest rivals.
As the season progressed, Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese mounted a challenge. Mansell, in particular, closed the gap with a series of mid-season victories, including wins at the French, British, German, Italian, and Spanish Grands Prix, ultimately finishing the year with five wins. Patrese contributed two wins for Williams. Despite this, Senna’s consistency—achieving 12 podiums and seven wins—allowed him to maintain his advantage. After round 11, Senna had 71 points to Mansell’s 49, and he extended his lead further in the closing rounds, finishing with 96 points to Mansell’s 72.
The Constructors’ battle was closely contested, with Williams briefly overtaking McLaren after round 14. However, McLaren regained the lead in the final two races, ending with 139 points to Williams’ 125. Five different drivers won races, and engine failures were the most common cause of retirements, accounting for 66 DNFs. Senna also achieved eight pole positions, the most of any driver that year. The season is noted for Senna’s strong start, Williams’ mid-season resurgence, and McLaren’s ultimate triumph in both championships.
