Drivers' Champion
Mika Häkkinen→Constructors' Champion
Ferrari→Mika Häkkinen secured the drivers’ championship in a season spanning 16 Grands Prix, while Ferrari claimed the constructors’ title. The campaign was characterized by a closely contested title fight, with the lead in the drivers’ standings shifting multiple times between Häkkinen and Ferrari’s Eddie Irvine. Häkkinen won five races and achieved 11 pole positions, while Irvine took four victories. The season saw six different race winners, including Michael Schumacher, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, and Johnny Herbert.
The points gap between the top contenders remained narrow throughout the year. Early in the season, Michael Schumacher led the standings, but after round six, Häkkinen moved ahead. Irvine then took the lead after round ten, holding a slender advantage until the penultimate race. Entering the final round, Irvine led Häkkinen by four points, but Häkkinen’s victory at the Japanese Grand Prix secured him the championship by a two-point margin (76 to 74).
Ferrari’s consistency, with six wins and 128 points, enabled them to win the constructors’ championship, narrowly ahead of McLaren’s 124 points and seven victories. Notably, Johnny Herbert’s win for Stewart at the European Grand Prix marked a rare triumph for the team. The season featured a high number of retirements due to spins, gearbox, and engine failures.
Within the context of Formula 1 history, the 1999 season stands out for its competitive balance and dramatic title battle, rather than dominance by a single driver or team.
