1998 Season

Mika Häkkinen secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for McLaren, in a season contested over 16 races. McLaren also clinched the Constructors’ Championship with 156 points and nine wins. The season featured four different race winners: Häkkinen (8 wins), Michael Schumacher (6), David Coulthard (1), and Damon Hill (1).

The championship battle was closely fought between Häkkinen and Schumacher. Häkkinen began the year strongly, winning the opening two rounds and building an early lead. Schumacher responded with a series of victories mid-season, and by the Italian Grand Prix (round 14), both drivers were tied at 80 points with six wins each. The contest remained open until the final round, where Häkkinen’s victory at the Japanese Grand Prix secured his title with 100 points to Schumacher’s 86.

The Constructors’ title also saw a close contest between McLaren and Ferrari, with McLaren ultimately prevailing by 23 points. Notably, Damon Hill delivered Jordan’s only win of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix. The season was marked by a high number of retirements due to mechanical failures and incidents, including 30 engine-related and 30 spin-off retirements.

Within Formula 1 history, the 1998 season is characterized by a competitive title fight between two leading teams and drivers. McLaren’s performance marked a return to prominence, while Ferrari continued its resurgence. The season did not feature record-breaking achievements but stands out for its close competition and pivotal championship decider.
