Drivers' Champion
Jack Brabham→Constructors' Champion
Brabham-Repco→Jack Brabham secured the drivers’ championship in a season contested over nine races, driving for Brabham-Repco, which also claimed the constructors’ title. The 1966 campaign marked a significant period in Formula 1 history, coinciding with the introduction of new engine regulations that increased engine capacity to three litres. This change ushered in a new era and presented technical challenges for teams.
The season began with victories for Jackie Stewart (BRM) in Monaco and John Surtees (Scuderia Ferrari) in Belgium. Brabham emerged as the dominant force from the French Grand Prix onward, winning four consecutive races (France, Britain, Netherlands, and Germany). This remarkable mid-season run gave Brabham a commanding lead in the championship standings. After six rounds, Brabham had amassed 39 points, more than double his closest rivals. He ultimately finished the season with 42 points and four wins, while Surtees, with two victories, finished second on 28 points.
Five different drivers won races, but Brabham’s consistency and performance established a clear margin over his competitors. The constructors’ battle also saw Brabham-Repco pull ahead after the early rounds, finishing with 42 points to Scuderia Ferrari’s 31.
The season was notable for a high number of mechanical retirements, particularly due to engine failures, reflecting the technical challenges of the new regulations. Brabham’s achievement was significant, as he became the first driver to win the championship in a car bearing his own name, underscoring both his driving and engineering prowess during a pivotal transitional era for Formula 1.
