1988 Season

Ayrton Senna secured the drivers’ championship, while McLaren dominated the constructors’ title in a season comprising 16 races. The 1988 campaign is notable for McLaren’s overwhelming performance, with the team winning 15 out of 16 Grands Prix. Senna achieved 8 victories and 13 pole positions, while his teammate Alain Prost won 7 races and secured 14 podiums, highlighting the intra-team rivalry that defined the championship fight.

The title battle between Senna and Prost was closely contested throughout the season. Prost led the early rounds, steadily building a points advantage. By mid-season, Senna began to close the gap, and after round 10, both drivers were tied on points. Senna then edged ahead with a series of victories, but Prost remained in contention, keeping the pressure on until the penultimate round. Senna clinched the championship with a total of 90 points to Prost’s 87, reflecting a narrow margin in the final standings.

Gerhard Berger was the only non-McLaren driver to win a race, taking victory for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix. This result prevented McLaren from achieving a perfect season. The season also saw a high number of retirements due to engine failures, with 59 DNFs attributed to this cause.

The 1988 season is recognized as one of the most dominant by a single team in Formula 1 history, occurring during the final year of the turbocharged engine era. No significant wet-weather events or other external factors are recorded as having influenced race outcomes.
