Drivers' Champion
Alain Prost→Constructors' Champion
McLaren→Alain Prost secured the Drivers’ Championship, while McLaren won the Constructors’ title in a season contested over 16 races. The year featured six different race winners, with Ayrton Senna taking the most victories (six), followed by Prost (four), Nigel Mansell and Thierry Boutsen (two each), and single wins for Gerhard Berger and Alessandro Nannini.
The championship battle was primarily between Prost and Senna, both driving for McLaren. Early in the season, Senna led after four rounds, but Prost overtook him after the fifth race. From round seven onwards, Prost maintained and gradually extended his lead, ultimately finishing the season with 76 points to Senna’s 60. The points-gap progression shows that after round eight, Prost’s advantage became decisive, and Senna was unable to close the gap in the final races.
McLaren’s dominance is reflected in their 10 wins and 141 points, far ahead of Williams (77 points) and Ferrari (59 points). Senna achieved 13 pole positions, indicating strong qualifying performance, while Prost’s consistency yielded 11 podiums. The season also saw notable performances from drivers starting outside the front rows, such as Mansell’s win from 12th on the grid in Hungary.
The 1989 season took place during the naturally aspirated engine era, following the ban on turbocharged engines. High attrition was notable, with numerous retirements due to engine, gearbox, and collision-related issues. While the season was marked by McLaren’s technical superiority, the intra-team rivalry between Prost and Senna defined the competitive narrative.
