Drivers' Champion
Fernando Alonso→Constructors' Champion
Renault→Fernando Alonso secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Renault, while Renault also claimed the Constructors’ Championship. The season comprised 19 races, marking a lengthy calendar for the era. Five different drivers won races, with Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen each achieving seven victories. Juan Pablo Montoya, Giancarlo Fisichella, and Michael Schumacher also took wins, the latter at the United States Grand Prix.
The championship battle was characterized by an early advantage for Alonso, who built a significant points lead through consistent podium finishes and race wins in the opening rounds. After round 7, Alonso had 59 points to Räikkönen’s 27. Räikkönen mounted a strong mid-season challenge, closing the gap with a series of victories, but Alonso’s reliability and consistent scoring enabled him to maintain his lead. By the final round, Alonso finished with 133 points to Räikkönen’s 112.
In the Constructors’ standings, Renault and McLaren F1 Team were closely matched. Renault led for much of the season, but McLaren briefly overtook them after round 17. Renault regained the lead in the final two races, finishing with 191 points to McLaren’s 182. Ferrari, dominant in previous years, managed only one win and finished third.
The season saw a high number of retirements due to mechanical failures and accidents. Notably, the United States Grand Prix had only one race winner due to unusual circumstances. The 2005 season is marked by a close title contest and the end of Ferrari’s dominance, occurring during a period of significant technical regulation changes in Formula 1.
