Drivers' Champion
Lewis Hamilton→Constructors' Champion
Mercedes→Lewis Hamilton won the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Mercedes, in a season comprising 19 races. Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team also secured the Constructors’ Championship, amassing 701 points and 16 race victories. The season marked a significant shift in Formula 1, being the first year of the turbo-hybrid power unit era.
The title battle was primarily contested between Hamilton and his teammate Nico Rosberg. Early in the season, Rosberg led the standings, reaching a peak advantage of 29 points after round 8. Hamilton then began to close the gap, taking the lead after round 14. The points gap between the two fluctuated throughout, with Hamilton ultimately finishing 67 points ahead of Rosberg (384 to 317) after winning the final race in Abu Dhabi. Daniel Ricciardo, driving for Red Bull, was the only non-Mercedes driver to win races, taking three victories and finishing third in the standings.
Hamilton achieved 11 wins and 16 podiums, while Rosberg secured 5 wins and 15 podiums. Mercedes’ dominance was further highlighted by their 16 wins out of 19 races and 18 pole positions (Rosberg 11, Hamilton 7). The Constructors’ Championship was won by a margin of 296 points over Red Bull Racing.
The season saw three different race winners and a high number of retirements due to technical issues, reflecting the challenges of the new hybrid regulations. The 2014 season is notable for Mercedes’ dominant performance and the beginning of a new technological era in Formula 1.
