Drivers' Champion
Lewis Hamilton→Constructors' Champion
Mercedes→Lewis Hamilton secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Mercedes, in a season comprising 21 races. Mercedes also claimed the Constructors’ Championship, amassing 739 points and 15 wins. The season featured five different race winners: Hamilton (11), Valtteri Bottas (4), Max Verstappen (3), Charles Leclerc (2), and Sebastian Vettel (1).
The championship battle initially saw Bottas and Hamilton closely matched, with the points gap between them fluctuating in the early rounds. After four races, Bottas led Hamilton by just one point. However, from round five onward, Hamilton began to extend his lead, reaching a 17-point advantage after six rounds and a 36-point gap by round eight. The margin continued to grow, peaking at 87 points by season’s end, indicating a dominant campaign for Hamilton.
Mercedes’ dominance was evident throughout the year, with the team winning 15 of 21 races. Ferrari and Red Bull were the only other teams to secure victories, with Ferrari achieving three wins and Red Bull also taking three. Charles Leclerc led the pole position tally with six, while Hamilton and Bottas each secured five.
The season was marked by reliability issues and incidents, including 16 retirements due to collisions and a range of technical failures. The 2019 season continued the hybrid power unit era, with Mercedes maintaining its competitive supremacy. Hamilton’s 11 wins and 17 podiums underscored his control of the championship, while Mercedes extended its sequence of consecutive constructors’ titles. The points progression and final standings reflect a season characterized by sustained dominance rather than a closely fought title contest.
