2022 Season

Max Verstappen secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Red Bull Racing, in a season consisting of 22 races. Red Bull Racing also won the Constructors’ Championship, finishing with 759 points and 17 race victories. The 2022 season marked the introduction of new technical regulations, with ground-effect aerodynamics returning to Formula 1.

The early part of the season saw Charles Leclerc and Scuderia Ferrari leading both championships, with Leclerc winning two of the first three races and holding a 27-point lead after round 4. However, Verstappen and Red Bull quickly closed the gap, overtaking Ferrari in both championships after round 6. Verstappen’s consistent performance, including a record 15 race wins in a single season, allowed him to build an increasingly insurmountable lead. By round 13, Verstappen’s advantage over his closest rival had grown to 80 points, and by the end of the season, the gap to second place was 146 points.

Five different drivers won races: Verstappen (15), Leclerc (3), Sergio Pérez (2), Carlos Sainz (1), and George Russell (1). Verstappen’s 15 victories set a new single-season win record. Notable incidents included a variety of retirements due to collisions and mechanical failures, reflecting the challenges of the new regulations.

The season is notable for Red Bull’s dominance and Verstappen’s record-breaking achievements, contrasting with the close title battles of previous years. The 2022 campaign stands out as a defining year in the new era of Formula 1 regulations.
