1969 Season

Jackie Stewart secured the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Matra-Ford, during a season comprising 11 races. Matra-Ford also claimed the Constructors’ Championship, marking a notable achievement in Formula 1 history. Stewart’s campaign was marked by dominance, as he won six Grands Prix: South Africa, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Britain, and Italy. His consistent performance included seven podium finishes, and he led the championship from the opening rounds.

The title race was largely one-sided. Stewart established an early lead, accumulating 18 points after just two rounds, and extended his advantage with successive victories. By round six, Stewart had amassed 45 points, with his closest rivals, Bruce McLaren and Graham Hill, trailing significantly. After his sixth win at Monza, Stewart’s points total reached 60, effectively securing the championship well before the season’s conclusion. Jacky Ickx, with two wins for Brabham-Ford, finished second in the standings but was unable to challenge Stewart’s commanding lead.

Five different drivers won races, but Stewart’s six victories set him apart. The season saw a high rate of mechanical retirements, with engine failures being the most common cause. Jochen Rindt claimed five pole positions, while other race winners included Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, and Denny Hulme.

The 1969 season is recognized as a dominant era for Stewart and Matra-Ford, with the championship decided by a substantial margin and little contention for the title after midseason.
