1968 Season

Graham Hill won the Drivers’ Championship, driving for Lotus-Ford, during a season that comprised 12 races. Lotus-Ford also secured the Constructors’ Championship, finishing ahead of McLaren-Ford and Matra-Ford. The season featured notable competitiveness, with seven different race winners, including Hill, Jackie Stewart, Denny Hulme, Jim Clark, Bruce McLaren, Jacky Ickx, and Jo Siffert.

The championship narrative was shaped by a close contest among Hill, Stewart, and Hulme. Hill began strongly, moving into the lead after the second round and maintaining his position through the mid-season, despite challenges from Stewart and Ickx. Stewart closed the gap in the latter stages, particularly after his third win at the United States Grand Prix, but Hill’s victory in the final race in Mexico secured his title with 48 points to Stewart’s 36 and Hulme’s 33.

Mechanical reliability was a significant factor, with numerous retirements due to engine, accident, and other technical failures. The season also marked a period of technical transition, with Ford-powered teams achieving considerable success.

No single driver dominated, as reflected in the distribution of wins and podiums. Hill’s three victories matched Stewart’s tally, while Hulme and others also contributed to a varied winners’ list.
