1972 Season

Emerson Fittipaldi secured the drivers’ championship, driving for Team Lotus, in a season comprising 12 races. Team Lotus also claimed the constructors’ title, finishing with 61 points and five wins. Fittipaldi’s campaign was marked by consistency and speed, as he achieved five victories (Spanish, Belgian, British, Austrian, and Italian Grands Prix) and stood on the podium eight times.

The title battle began with multiple contenders, including Denny Hulme and Jackie Stewart, who each won early rounds. After the opening races, the points were closely contested, with Fittipaldi, Hulme, and Jacky Ickx all within reach of the lead. However, from the fifth round onward, Fittipaldi established a clear advantage, steadily increasing his points tally. By round seven, he had built a substantial lead, and after the Italian Grand Prix (round 10), his total of 61 points put him beyond the reach of his rivals. Stewart finished the season second with 45 points and four wins, while Hulme was third with 39 points.

Five different drivers won races, with Stewart taking four victories and Hulme, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, and Jacky Ickx each winning once. Notably, Fittipaldi’s championship was achieved in the early 1970s era of evolving regulations and increasing reliability challenges, as evidenced by a high number of retirements due to mechanical failures. The 1972 season is recognized for Fittipaldi’s dominant performance and Team Lotus’s technical strength, setting a benchmark in Formula 1’s history for driver and team excellence during this period.
