Drivers' Champion
Jackie Stewart→Constructors' Champion
Team Lotus→Jackie Stewart secured the Drivers’ Championship, while Team Lotus claimed the Constructors’ Championship in a season contested over 15 races. The campaign featured five different race winners: Stewart (5 wins), Ronnie Peterson (4), Emerson Fittipaldi (3), Peter Revson (2), and Denny Hulme (1). Team Lotus achieved seven victories, with Peterson and Fittipaldi contributing, while Tyrrell’s Stewart led his team to five wins.
The title battle was closely fought in the first half of the season. Fittipaldi led after four rounds, with Stewart gradually closing the gap. By round 8, Stewart overtook Fittipaldi in the standings, and from round 10 onward, Stewart extended his lead, ultimately finishing the season with 71 points to Fittipaldi’s 55 and Peterson’s 52. Stewart’s consistency was reflected in his eight podiums, matching Fittipaldi, while François Cevert also played a significant supporting role for Tyrrell, achieving seven podiums.
In the Constructors’ standings, Team Lotus and Tyrrell exchanged the lead multiple times, with Lotus pulling ahead decisively in the final two rounds to finish with 91 points, ahead of Tyrrell’s 80 and McLaren’s 58. Notably, Ronnie Peterson secured nine pole positions, the most of any driver that year.
The season was marked by high attrition, with 28 retirements due to accidents and numerous mechanical failures. The 1973 season stands out in Formula 1 history for its competitive title fight, multiple race winners, and being part of the early 1970s era characterized by evolving regulations and increasing technical complexity.
