James Hunt→Constructors' Champion
Ferrari→James Hunt won the Drivers’ Championship in a season contested over 16 races. The Constructors’ Championship was secured by Ferrari. The 1976 season is recognized for its close and dramatic title battle, with Hunt and Ferrari’s Niki Lauda as the main protagonists.
Lauda began the season strongly, winning four of the first six races and building a significant points lead. By round 6, Lauda had accumulated 48 points and four wins, while Hunt had only one victory. Lauda extended his lead to 57 points and five wins after nine rounds. However, Hunt mounted a comeback in the latter half of the season, winning six races overall, including crucial victories in rounds 10, 12, 14, and 15.
The points gap narrowed significantly in the closing stages. After round 14, Lauda held a narrow lead over Hunt (60 to 56 points). Hunt overtook Lauda after round 15, leading by one point (65 to 64). The championship was ultimately decided at the final race in Japan, where Hunt’s third-place finish secured the title by two points (66 to 64).
Seven different drivers took race wins, reflecting a competitive field. Notable race winners included Clay Regazzoni, Jody Scheckter, John Watson, Ronnie Peterson, and Mario Andretti. Hunt also led the season in pole positions, with eight.
The 1976 season is remembered as one of the closest and most competitive in Formula 1 history, with the championship outcome undecided until the final race. Ferrari’s consistent performance throughout the year ensured their Constructors’ title.
